First Wave's Kei Kamara hits his stride! 4 goals in 3 matches for the MLS All-Star!

First Wave's Kei Kamara hits his stride! 4 goals in 3 matches for the MLS All-Star!

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – It’s a small sample size, but in the past three games Kei Kamara has found the goal-scoring form that has often eluded him during his time with the New England Revolution.

Kamara, who found the back of the net 27 times in 41 regular-season appearances with Columbus Crew SC, has scored 15 goals in the same amount of appearances with New England.

The goals have been flowing for Kamara in recent weeks, however, as he’s struck four times in the past three games to match his scoring output through the entire first half of the season.

So, what’s changed? According to Kamara, it’s a matter of service.

“You put the ball in the box, I can score goals,” Kamara said after scoring the Revs’ lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Fire last weekend. “That’s how all the goals have happened.”

Indeed, three of Kamara’s four goals in recent weeks have been from crosses that he met with first-time finishes inside the box. Most promising for the Revs is that all three of those crosses came from different players: Andrew Farrell, Kelyn Rowe and Lee Nguyen.

First Wave Rookie Nathan Smith find his groove in the LA Galaxy defense!First Wave Rookie Nathan Smith finds his groove in the LA Galaxy defense!

Nathan Smith is just a rookie, but the LA Galaxy's young outside back is already making a name for himself.

Smith, 22 made his second start and third appearance of his fledgling Major League Soccer career last Saturday during the team's 4-2 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Facing a talented Whitecaps attack on the road, Smith did not shrink from the opportunity as he seemed at ease on both sides of the ball. Head Coach Curt Onalfo is pleased with the rookie's performance.

That said, Onalfo isn’t the only one to compliment the youngster’s guile as captain Jelle Van Damme; a left back by trade, has always been impressed with Smith’s start.

“He did well. He can only get better and improve. He’s a young kid with a good mentality,” Van Damme said. “He’s getting more mature with more games that he plays. He’s a good young kid who wants to learn and that’s a very good ability to have as a young soccer player.”

Five young up-and-comers who deserve playing time in 2017! First Wave's Memo Rodriguez!Five young up-and-comers who deserve playing time in 2017! First Wave's Memo Rodriguez!

Perhaps no one was more interested in Wilmer Cabrera’s ascension to the Dynamo head coaching position this offseason than scintillating midfielder Memo Rodriguez.

The Dynamo have not been volume Homegrown signers, preferring instead to take a slow and steady approach with the few they’ve locked up. So when they signed Rodriguez with the sixth Homegrown deal in club history before the 2015 season, no one was quite sure what to expect for lack of examples.

Rodriguez quickly became a Cabrera favorite, logging more than 1,800 minutes and racking up six goals and seven assists. Rodriguez was so creatively influential that he largely kept Christian Lucatero, one of the more exciting young Homegrowns around, on the bench. Rodriguez, who’s appeared in the MLS Homegrown Game, is now 21, which is hardly kid status anymore. With no senior team minutes yet to his name, it’s time to see what he has.

Sporting Kansas City has signed rookie defender Colton Storm to a contract, the club announced Friday.

"I am very excited to sign my first professional contract with Sporting KC," Storm said. "Since the moment I got here, the players and staff have welcomed me with open arms. I look forward to continuing my progression as a player with the club and playing in front of the great fans at Children's Mercy Park."

Storm joined Sporting Kansas City in January as the No. 14 overall selection in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. He has since appeared in two preseason matches for the club in Tucson, Arizona, logging 75 total minutes.

“I believe that the MLS SuperDraft continues to provide opportunities for teams to build their rosters,” Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes said. “Colton is a player that not only possesses very good qualities in his position, but when talking to people who have worked with him in the past, it’s clear he has a very strong mentality and work ethic. Those are things we value in players on our team and we look forward to continuing our work with Colton as he attempts to leave his mark on our club.”
